CHARITIES:
How does a charity get pre-qualified so it can be nominated?
How do nonprofits initially get on the list?
Our initial list of charities was compiled and vetted with the help of the Fundación La Puerta and ICF through their prior experiences with Tecate nonprofits. All have nonprofit status but are not necessarily exempt from paying taxes. For those that don’t have Mexican tax-deductible status (called Hacienda and issued by SAT which is the Mexican equivalent to the IRS), ICF did a financial audit to ensure that they have the processes in place for accountability and reporting. Our team also attempts to do a site visit at the nonprofits. Each of these charities will be considered for an award at every meeting unless they have been awarded by us in the previous three years. In addition, as a member, you personally can enter your name to present a charity that has already been vetted (thereby doubling it's chances of being chosen to present), or you can nominate a new nonprofit and we will get it vetted for you.
What are the vetting requirements for charitable organizations?
To be considered for an award, an organization must meet the following criteria:

What are the vetting requirements for charitable organizations?
To be considered for an award, an organization must meet the following criteria:
- It must be a non-profit recognized by the Mexican government as a Donataria Autorizada organization.
- It must have Donataria Autorizada status for at least three years
- At least 75% of their funds must be allocated to services in Tecate, or they must be able to dedicate at least 75% of our donation to a satellite program in Tecate (if the nonprofit is based elsewhere such as Tijuana).
- It must be willing to send a representative to our next meeting to share how the money was or will be spent, and it must agree not to create, sell, or distribute a list with our members' contact information, and agree not to solicit our members directly for further contributions.
How do I know if my charity satisfies the criteria to be nominated?
- We maintain and are constantly updating a list of local charities that satisfy our criteria. If you would like to nominate a charity, please first check the List of Pre-Qualified Local Charities on our website. If your charity is listed, all you have to do is write your name and the name of the charity on a slip of paper when you attend an in-person meeting, or email 100whocaretecate@gmail.com to enter your nomination for a virtual meeting. Or if you cannot attend the meeting, let us know which charity you want to nominate.
- If your charity is NOT listed, please fill out the Charity Pre-Qualification Form for Members and submit it to us electronically at least ONE MONTH before our next meeting. Once we confirm that it satisfies the criteria listed above, we will put it on our list and you are free to nominate it.
- One of our organizers will determine if your nominated charity meets our eligibility criteria. Someone will contact you in the next several days if there is a problem with the charity's eligibility. If it meets our criteria it will go on the Pre-Qualified charity list, and you (or any member) are free to nominate it at any meeting. Be sure to check to make sure your charity is on the list before nominating it at a meeting.
